Why Make Focaccia Bread at Home?

Baking focaccia bread at home allows you to enjoy the authentic taste of freshly baked bread without any preservatives. It’s simple to prepare and adds a warm, homemade touch to any meal. The combination of Pride of India's Seasoning Salt and Garlic Salt gives the bread a burst of flavor, while the olive oil keeps it moist and tender. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or a beginner, this recipe is perfect for bringing the joy of Italian baking into your kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 & 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon Pride of India Seasoning Salt
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (plus more for drizzling)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pride of India Garlic Salt
  • Fresh rosemary leaves (optional, for garnish)
  • Cherry tomatoes, halved (optional, for topping)

                Tools Needed

                • Large mixing bowl
                • 9×13-inch baking sheet
                • Measuring cups and spoons
                • Plastic wrap or damp kitchen towel

Step-by-Step Instructions to Make Focaccia Bread

                      1. Prepare the Dough (15 minutes)
                        • In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy, which means the yeast is activated.
                        • Add the flour, Seasoning Salt, and 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the bowl. Stir the mixture until a sticky dough forms.
                          2. Let the Dough Rise (1 hour)
                            • Transfer the dough to an oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.
                            3. Shape the Dough (10 minutes)
                              • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Transfer the risen dough onto a 9×13-inch oiled baking sheet, spreading it out evenly with your hands. Use your fingers to create dimples all over the surface of the dough.
                              • Drizzle some more olive oil on top, and sprinkle with garlic salt for an extra burst of flavor.
                                4. Add Toppings (5 minutes)
                                  • If desired, garnish with fresh rosemary leaves and halved cherry tomatoes. These toppings not only add visual appeal but also enhance the bread's flavor.
                                  5. Bake the Focaccia (20-25 minutes)
                                    • Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the focaccia is golden brown and the edges are crisp. Allow it to cool slightly before slicing.
                                    Tips for Perfect Focaccia
                                    • Ensure the Water Temperature Is Correct: The water should be warm, around 110°F (43°C), to activate the yeast. If it’s too hot, it can kill the yeast, and if too cold, the yeast won't activate properly.
                                    • Oil Your Hands When Shaping the Dough: Focaccia dough is sticky, so drizzling some olive oil on your hands will make it easier to handle.
                                    • Use a Nonstick Baking Sheet: For easy release and a perfect crust, use a nonstick baking sheet or line the pan with parchment paper.

                                         Variations and Substitutions

                                        • Different Herbs: If you don’t have rosemary, try using thyme, oregano, or basil for a different flavor profile.
                                        • Make It Spicier: For a bit of heat, add crushed red pepper flakes on top before baking.
